AMGA Climbing Wall Instructor Course
The AMGA, has developed a program to train and evaluate indoor climbing wall instructors. Upon successful completion of the course the participants will receive a certification as a Climbing Wall Instructor. The course will be a minimum of twenty hours of instruction, skills demonstration, and evaluation.

The course will address the technical skills necessary to manage an instructional program at an indoor / artificial climbing wall facility, and will address the following general topic areas:
Instructor roles, responsibilities and professionalism
Client orientation and instruction
Risk management
Lesson planning
Teaching basic climbing skills including movement
Teaching lead climbing skills
Teaching top-rope and lead belaying techniques
Equipment and facility use
Rescue and emergency procedures

The course is available for lead and non lead instructors.
This is a recognized entry-level program for the AMGA.

This course can run privately or in a group. The rates for the CWI course are specialty rates and are not listed on our Rates & Reservations page. For more information please contact us.

CWI Course Candidate Pre-Requisites
You meet the pre-requisites for the CWI course if you:
1. Are 18 years of age (persons 16 to 18 may take the course and will receive a     letter of completion of the course, if completed successfully).
2. Have at least one year documented personal climbing experience (a     minimum of 20 outings climbing indoors and/or outdoors).
3. Hold current First Aid and CPR (a minimum of American Red Cross Basic –     5.5 to 6.5 hours) and current CPR.
4. Have the following climbing ability: 5.8 top rope (for non-lead     certification) and 5.8 lead/5.9 top rope (for lead certification) on artificial     structures
    Movement demonstrating calm, confidence, good position, balance, solid     base of support, no falls, and general body awareness, and have ability to     demonstrate a controlled fall, both on a rope and bouldering

Without having at least this amount experience you are unlikely to play a constructive part on the course or be able to make best use of the training. If you are unsure of your skill levels we suggest hiring an AMGA/IFMGA certified guide to evaluate and enhance your skills and experience prior to CWI Program enrollment.
